Are you about to visit Venice and would like to communicate better with locals?
Venice is a one-of-a-kind city, made of canals, bridges, palaces… and words!
Here are 5 useful phrases for your trip – perfect for anyone learning Italian and eager to put it into practice.
“Un’ombra e un cicchetto, per favore.”
Use this when you'd like to order a glass of wine and a typical Venetian snack.
“Dov’è la fermata del vaporetto?”
This will help you get around the canals like a true local. The vaporetto is a waterbus run by the ACTV public transport company. Remember: you must have a valid ticket before boarding – or you might face a hefty fine!
“Vorrei prenotare un tavolo per 2 persone.”
Useful for booking a table at a restaurant, whether over the phone or in person.
“A che ora chiude il museo?”
Perfect if you want to check the closing time of a museum or tourist site, so you can plan your day and make sure you don’t miss the last admission.
“Grazie, tutto buonissimo.”
Say this at the end of a meal in a bar or restaurant – it’s a lovely way to show appreciation for the food.
The words “grazie” (thank you) and “per favore” (please) will always be key to interacting with locals.
Wherever you go in the world, kindness is contagious!
